Sony and Santa Monica Studio have officially announced God of War: Laufey, the next major installment in the popular God of War franchise. The game, announced during PlayStation's most recent State of Play presentation, shifts the focus away from Kratos and puts players in the shoes of Faye (Laufey the Just), the legendary warrior, Kratos' wife, and mother of Atreus.
The reveal concluded the showcase with over 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay, giving fans their first detailed look at the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive. While Sony has yet to announce a release date, the extensive gameplay footage suggests that the project is well underway.
God of War: Laufey Faye's Journey Begins
God of War: Laufey tells a completely new story centered on Faye. The game begins after her funeral, but instead of finding peace, she awakens in a mysterious realm known as The Everywhen. She discovers that the plans she created to protect Kratos and Atreus are no longer viable.
To save her family, Faye must journey through a deadly afterlife ruled by powerful gods, magical creatures, and forces from various mythologies. The Everywhen is a one-of-a-kind realm where all magic begins and ends, bringing together gods and beings from various worlds in a conflict-filled and mysterious environment.
Fast and Action-Packed Combat
While God of War: Ragnarok highlighted Kratos' heavy-hitting combat style, Laufey takes a much faster and more agile approach. Gameplay footage showed Faye effortlessly transitioning between ground and aerial attacks, delivering fluid combos while maintaining the franchise's brutal intensity.
Santa Monica Studio claims that the combat system combines the strengths of modern God of War games with elements inspired by the series' classic Greek-era action roots. The end result appears to be a more responsive and acrobatic fighting style that divides Faye from Kratos while retaining the franchise's unique feel.
Throughout the adventure, players will encounter a variety of supernatural enemies, including hostile gods and strange magical creatures that inhabit The Everywhen. The reveal also hinted at large-scale boss battles, which promise to deliver the cinematic spectacle fans expect from the series.
New Characters Join The Journey
Deborah Ann Woll returns to play Faye, bringing one of the franchise's most mysterious characters to the spotlight. She'll be joined by several new characters, including Phranque, a cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon brought to life by Perlina Lau.
The gameplay trailer also included brief glimpses of powerful gods like Sekhmet and Begtse, who appear to play important roles in Faye's journey through the afterlife.
The game is being directed by Ariel Lawrence, a former developer who has worked on the God of War franchise for nearly 20 years, including Ghost of Sparta and Ascension. According to reports, longtime series creator Cory Barlog is involved in the project and will help guide the franchise's next chapter.
Following the success of God of War Ragnarök and the Valhalla expansion, God of War: Laufey takes the series in a new direction, focusing on Faye's story and introducing a new mythological realm known as The Everywhen. While there is no set release date, the game is already shaping up to be one of PlayStation's most anticipated exclusives, combining emotional storytelling with fast-paced action and exploration.
