Hideo Kojima's upcoming spy games Physint has taken an extreme and unexpected turn. The game was originally being developed with PlayStation Studios, but Sony has withdrawn from the project, and Xbox becoming Kojima Productions as a new partner.

The announcement is surprising given Kojima's decades-long relationship with PlayStation. Physint was first revealed in 2024 as a brand-new action-espionage IP that promised to blend Kojima's signature cinematic storytelling with next-generation gameplay.

Sony confirmed the change in a statement shared on social media, saying: “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint.”

The company did not explain why it left the project. Sony did, however, highlight that it still has a high regard for Kojima's creative vision and that its relationship with the renowned developer is strong.

Kojima later revealed that PlayStation Studios had informed him of the decision several months ago. According to the developer, Kojima Productions spent the next three months looking for a new partner rather than letting Physint go.

The search eventually brought the studio to Xbox. Kojima confirming that the game’s development will continue.

“We found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future,”

Xbox also made clear how important the agreement is to the company. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said:

“We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint.”

Physint will be Kojima Productions' second major project involving Xbox. The studio is also working with Microsoft on OD, an experimental horror game.

However, Physint is expected to return Kojima to the action-espionage genre that helped him build a reputation. The developer previously stated that fan demand was a major factor in his decision to create another espionage-themed game.

There is still a long wait ahead. Kojima previously stated that Physint could take another five to six years to complete, implying that its release could occur around 2030 or later.

For the time being, the most important takeaway is that Physint has not been canceled. Its journey has simply changed from PlayStation to Xbox, providing Kojima Productions with a new partner to help bring its ambitious espionage vision to life.
