Mortal Shell 2 has received a surprise Open Beta ahead of its official release, allowing players to play the highly anticipated action RPG for free. Publisher PlayStack and developer Cold Symmetry have released the beta on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, allowing fans to experience the game's early hours before its official release on August 20, 2026.
The free Open Beta contains approximately three hours of gameplay, giving players an early look at the sequel's brutal combat, dark fantasy world, and upgraded gameplay mechanics. It also allows players to test performance on their preferred platform before committing to purchasing the full game.
One of the most notable features is that selected story progression will be carried over to the final release. Players who complete the Prologue and progress beyond Marrow Keep will not have to replay those sections after launch. To maintain game balance, inventory-related progress—including weapons, Shells, currency, collectibles, and upgrades—will be reset when the game is officially released.
Players who participate in the beta will also receive an exclusive cosmetic reward known as The Flayed Harbinger, which will be available in the full version of the game.
Mortal Shell 2 was announced in 2025 and expands on the original title with faster combat, deeper weapon customization, and a more interconnected world that promotes exploration without becoming overwhelming. The sequel aims to provide a more complete action RPG experience while maintaining the challenging gameplay that made the original game popular.
With less than three weeks until release, Mortal Shell 2's free Open Beta provides an excellent opportunity for both returning fans and newcomers to experience the game before it is released. If you've been wondering if the sequel will live up to expectations, this early access period is your chance to find out.
