Xbox Could Soon Let Players Turn Physical Game Discs into Digital Copies

Microsoft may soon launch a major feature that will alter how Xbox players use their physical game collections. According to recent reports, the company is preparing to launch its rumored 'Disc-to-Digital' feature, which will convert eligible Xbox game discs into digital licenses linked to the player's Microsoft account.

The feature is expected to be compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X games. When a player inserts a supported disc, the system may verify ownership and unlock a digital version of the game. After activation, users may be able to play without inserting the disc into the console, which is especially useful for owners of digital-only devices such as the Xbox Series S.

According to reports, Microsoft planned to test the feature with Xbox Insiders before making it available to all users. While the testing timeline may have changed, sources say the rollout could still happen in the coming weeks. However, Microsoft has not officially announced a release date.

The digital license is also expected to include benefits exclusive to digital purchases, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming support for eligible Game Pass subscribers and Xbox Play Anywhere compatibility for supported titles.

To prevent misuse, the digital entitlement will reportedly be linked to the original game disc. If the disc is sold, traded, or transferred to another user, and digital license will also accompany it.

If officially launched, Disc-to-Digital could become one of Xbox's most significant quality-of-life enhancements, providing players with greater flexibility while preserving the value of their existing physical game libraries.
