Ubisoft is revisiting one of its most renowned open-world shooters. Far Cry 3: Classic Edition is set to receive a 60 FPS update for modern consoles, offering players a smoother and more responsive experience over a decade after the game's initial release.
This performance enhancement will be available on January 21 for PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. When the Classic Edition was launched in 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One, it was limited to 30 FPS, even on newer hardware. This new update finally removes that restriction for current-generation platforms.
A Major Upgrade for Far Cry 3 Classic Edition
Sony just dropped a new trailer that confirms the update, and it shows Far Cry 3 running way smoother at 60 FPS. This upgrade really amps up the gameplay, making shooting, driving, and exploring feel more like today's fast-paced shooters.
You can get Far Cry 3: Classic Edition through Ubisoft+ Classics, and it's also available with PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. So, if you're subscribed, you can enjoy the upgrade without buying the game again. Ubisoft hasn't said yet if players on older consoles will get these cool upgrades too.
More Far Cry Games Getting 60 FPS Support
Along with the Far Cry 3 announcement, Ubisoft has also hinted at some cool 60 FPS updates coming for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic and Far Cry Primal. They shared the news through a bunch of social media posts on the official Far Cry account, suggesting that all three games will get a next-gen performance boost.
Although Ubisoft has confirmed these updates are on the way, they haven't given us specific release dates for Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal yet. On Xbox Series X|S, Far Cry Primal already runs at 60 FPS thanks to FPS Boost, but the new patch is expected to bring native support and extend the upgrade to PlayStation platforms too.
Ubisoft’s Push for Next-Gen Updgrade
Ubisoft's been on a roll lately, giving their older games a fresh feel. They've already bumped up Far Cry 5 and Far Cry New Dawn to 60 FPS, along with a bunch of Assassin’s Creed titles. These tweaks make sure that even the older games still rock on the latest consoles.
Far Cry 3 which came out in 2012, is often seen as one of the best in the series. It's got that open-world vibe, the unforgettable villain Vaas Montenegro, and tons of player freedom. The 2018 Classic Edition kept the original charm but didn’t have any tech upgrades, so this new patch is a big deal for fans who’ve been around since the beginning.
What’s Next for the Far Cry Franchise?
The Far Cry series has been pretty quiet since Far Cry 6 dropped in 2021, but word on the street is that the next big game is in the works. Rumor has it that the new game might have a non-linear storyline, and we might not see it until 2026 or later because of some internal delays.
There's also talk that Ubisoft is working on a Far Cry multiplayer spin-off with an extraction-style gameplay, and FX is cooking up a Far Cry TV series. With Ubisoft's 40th anniversary coming up, these projects might be part of a bigger plan to celebrate its most popular games.
