Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi voiced confidence in the success of Gran Turismo 7 the racing game launched by Sony in March 2022, in a recent roundtable interview attended by GTPlanet. While exact sales data for the PS4 and PS5 titles have not been published, Yamauchi has highlighted the game's ongoing high level of user involvement since its release.
Yamauchi highlighted Gran Turismo 7's unique capacity to maintain an outstanding amount of active players which he believes separates it from other gaming titles. The president defined a huge increase in player numbers to the previous month's introduction of the Spec II update, which was the largest update to date. This update added new cars, the Lake Louise snow circuit, and new challenges and events to all gaming platforms.
Notably, the Spec II upgrade added exclusive PS5 features such as a four-player split-screen Couch Mode and Quick Race with Sophy, an AI driver agent integration. Yamauchi highlighted the unusual nature of such a significant rise in active users following an upgrade, citing industry norms.
Gran Turismo 7 received Metascores of 87 for the PS5 and 82 for the PS4 despite initial criticism for its usage of microtransactions and a tense launch marked by significant server difficulties. With a rating of 2.3, the game has Sony's lowest user score ever on the review aggregation site.
According to Sony, the Gran Turismo franchise, which began in 1997, has sold over 90 million units as of November 2022. Yamauchi addressed speculation about a PC version last December, noting that there were no ongoing developments for Gran Turismo 7 on PC, while he did not rule it out in the future.
