You'll encounter planets, moons, and floating ships as you travel across the various solar systems of Starfield. These spacecraft can be communicated with remotely, or you can approach them and board them to explore the inside.
Depending on where you are, you can decide when you wish to depart your spaceship. On planets, you simply choose a location to land, and the ship takes care of the rest. However, in space, you need to attach your ship to the space station or other ship if you want to enter it. It's known as docking. This guide will teach players how to dock in Starfield.
How to Dock your Ship in Starfield
In "The Old Neighbourhood," Starfield's second main story mission, entering space stations like the Nova Galactic Staryard requires manual docking. Take the following steps:
Step 1: Target the Space Station
Press the A button (E on PC) to target the station.
Step 2: Hail the Target
Hold A (E on PC) to initiate communication with the station.
Step 3: Maintain Close Distance
Stay within 500m of the target for docking.
Step 4: Activate Docking
When prompted, hold X (R on PC) to begin the docking procedure.
Step 5: Docking Completed
Your ship will autonomously dock, and you'll return to the pilot's seat.
After docking, choose from three options:
Board the Space Station/Ship using 'X' on Xbox/PC.
Undock and Continue Your Journey using Hold 'Y' on Xbox & 'Spacebar' on PC.
Roam Your Ship using 'B' on Xbox & 'E' on PC.
Handling Ship Matters Before Boarding in Starfield
Choose the third option if you have tasks to complete on your ship before entering the space station or another vessel. After finishing your ship-related duties, proceed to the ship's airlock. Open it to gain access to the nearby space station or ship with which you've docked.
Travel Considerations After Docking in Starfied
Certain actions are restricted once your ship is docked. It is not possible to travel quickly or to use the star map to select a new destination. To use the Grav jump to quickly travel to another location, you must first:
Re-enter your ship.
Assume the pilot's seat.
Select the undock option.
You can manually flexibility through space or consult the star chart to choose a place for rapid travel once you've successfully undocked and returned to space with control of your ship.
