Nintendo is making a significant change in how it prices its games. Beginning in May 2026, the company will offer different prices for physical and digital versions of its Nintendo Switch 2 titles, marking a major change from its previous pricing strategy.

The update was released on March 25 by Nintendo of America, confirming that upcoming first-party Switch 2 games will no longer have the same price across formats. Instead, digital versions will be less expensive than their physical counterparts.

This new approach begins with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, a side-scrolling platformer that will be released on May 21. Early preorder listings show the digital version at $60, while the physical edition will cost $70, resulting in a clear $10 difference between the two.

According to Nintendo, this change reflects the real-world costs associated with producing boxed copies, such as manufacturing, packaging, and distribution. Digital versions on the other hand avoid these costs allowing the company to pass on some savings to players.

Interestingly, this does not imply that all Switch 2 games will follow the same pricing model. Nintendo has already implemented "variable pricing," in which different games launch at different price points based on scale and scope. Donkey Kong Bananza, for example, is available in both formats for $69.99, whereas Mario Kart World debuted at $79.99.

The new policy simply adds another layer, separating digital and physical pricing when appropriate. Nintendo also stated that retailers will continue to set their own prices, so actual costs may vary depending on the store or region.

While this move may surprise long-time fans, especially given Nintendo's track record of keeping game prices stable, it may benefit players who prefer to buy digitally. Meanwhile, collectors who prefer physical copies may have to pay a small premium going forward.

Looking ahead, industry analysts believe that Nintendo may revisit hardware pricing for the Switch 2 due to rising production costs, though the company has not confirmed any such plans.

For the time being, all eyes are on Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which will be used as the first genuine trial of this new pricing model when it goes live on May 21.
