Sony has officially announced a new price increase for its PlayStation Plus Essential subscription tier, putting more stress on gamers already dealing with rising console and gaming costs worldwide. The new pricing will apply to new subscribers beginning May 20, with monthly and three-month membership plans becoming more expensive in several major markets.
The company claims the move is necessary due to "ongoing market conditions," which continue a broader trend of rising prices in the gaming industry.
PlayStation Plus Essential Gets More Expensive
Under the updated pricing structure, new PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers will now pay:
$10.99 / €9.99 / £7.99 for a 1-month subscription
$27.99 / €27.99 / £21.99 for a 3-month subscription
The increase represents a $1 or £1 jump for monthly memberships and roughly $3 or £3 more for three-month plans.
Sony confirmed the changes in an official PlayStation announcement, stating that existing subscribers in most regions will not be impacted immediately unless their memberships expire, are canceled, or switched to another plan. However, users in India and Turkey will not be protected and may face pricing changes sooner.
Sony Continues Broad Gaming Price Increases
Sony's latest PlayStation Plus price increase follows several previous price increases over the last year. Earlier in 2026, the company raised PS5 console prices in key markets including the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Japan. The PS5 Digital Edition became up to $100 more expensive in the United States, while the PS5 Pro reportedly increased by up to $150 in some regions.
The gaming industry has been hit by rising production costs, inflation, higher memory prices, and global tariffs, forcing companies to raise prices. Both Sony and Microsoft have stated that difficult economic conditions are affecting their gaming hardware and subscription businesses.

Sony's PlayStation Plus price increase comes just months before the planned release of GTA 6, which could attract millions of new players to PlayStation. Because online multiplayer requires a PlayStation Plus subscription, many believe Sony is attempting to increase subscription revenue before the game's release. The move has also been criticized, as Microsoft recently reduced Xbox Game Pass prices in some regions.
Sony remains confident about its gaming business, despite lower PS5 hardware sales. The company expects a 6% drop in annual gaming revenue, but profits may rise due to strong first-party game sales and Bungie's lower losses. Upcoming exclusive games, such as Wolverine from Insomniac Games, are expected to improve performance.
However, with the PS5 approaching six years old and prices still rising, many gamers believe the industry is changing in an unusual way compared to previous console generations, which typically became cheaper over time. For the time being, players interested in PlayStation Plus may want to subscribe early before the new prices go into effect on May 20.
