Fans hoping to step into the shoes of James Bond on Nintendo's next-generation hardware will have to wait a little longer. IO Interactive has confirmed that the Switch 2 version of 007 First Light has been delayed, with a new release date set for late summer.

The game will still be released on May 27 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but the Switch 2 edition, which was originally planned alongside those versions will require additional development time. According to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, the delay is intentional in order to ensure quality rather than rushing out an average port.

In a recent interview, Abrak stated that the game is already running on the new Nintendo system but the team is not satisfied yet. The studio wants to avoid releasing a version that fails to meet player expectations, focusing on performance and overall experience. In his words, the goal is simple: deliver the best possible version even if it means waiting.

007 First Light Likely Coming in Late Summer

While IO Interactive had initially committed to a summer release, Abrak indicated that the Switch 2 version would most likely arrive near the end of that window. Despite the delay, he assured fans that development goes on smoothly and that the game will undoubtedly be released.

This situation has naturally prompted comparisons to previous Nintendo platform delays, including the troubled case of Borderlands 4. However, Abrak was quick to dismiss any concerns, pointing out that 007 First Light is not facing indefinite delays or cancellation. Instead, it is a matter of refinement polishing the experience rather than addressing major issues.

From Past Nintendo Releases

The studio's approach is also influenced by its previous experience transferring the Hitman: World of Assassination series to Nintendo platforms. The cloud-based version released on the original Switch in 2021 was more of an experiment, and Abrak claims it did not fully meet industry expectations.

With Switch 2 things are different. IO Interactive is now working with native hardware rather than cloud streaming resulting in a more complete and reliable experience. That shift has raised the studio's internal standards, making them more hesitant to release anything that does not feel fully optimized.

“Bond Has a Special Place on Nintendo”

Abrak additionally addressed James Bond's legacy on Nintendo platforms, citing classics such as GoldenEye 007. That history is a major reason why the studio is taking special care with this version.

He emphasized that the character's legacy deserves respect and promised to personally ensure that the game launches in top shape. For IO Interactive, this is more than just another platform release; it's an opportunity to reintroduce Bond to a system where he once set gaming records.

The delay of the Switch 2 version may disappoint some players, but it's a calculated decision to deliver a polished and immersive experience. If IO Interactive keeps its promise, Nintendo fans could end up with the definitive version rather than a compromised one.
