Asus has officially released the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a new premium version of its Xbox-branded gaming handheld with several highly requested upgrades, including a larger OLED display, improved controls, and an eye-catching translucent design. The announcement represents another step forward for the growing handheld gaming market, as Microsoft and Asus continue to expand the Xbox gaming experience beyond traditional consoles.
The new model joins the ROG Xbox Ally lineup, which was introduced in 2025 with the standard Xbox Ally and the more powerful Xbox Ally X. While the X20 retains the same high-end internal hardware as the Ally X, Asus focuses on improving the overall gaming experience through better visuals, design, and new customization options.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bigger OLED Screen Headlines the Upgrades
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 standout feature is its new 7.4-inch OLED display. Compared to previous models' 7-inch IPS panels, the larger screen provides richer colors, deeper blacks, and significantly better HDR performance.
According to Asus, the new Nebula HDR display offers Full HD resolution, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and FreeSync Premium Pro compatibility. The panel can also reach up to 1400 nits of peak brightness and is VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified, ensuring a more immersive gaming experience both indoors and outdoors.
To maximize screen space without increasing device size, Asus reduced the bezel size around the display while retaining the handheld's portable form factor.
Familiar Power Under the Hood
Despite the visual upgrades, the hardware specifications are unchanged from the Xbox Ally X. The X20 is equipped with AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage.
This means that gamers can expect performance levels comparable to the current Ally X model, with the main improvements coming from improved display quality and user experience rather than increased processing power.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 Controls Designed for Competitive Play
Asus has updated the ROG Xbox Ally X20 with new TMR thumbsticks that provide greater accuracy, smoother movement, and longer-lasting performance. The company claims that the upgraded sticks help reduce stick drift while providing more precise control during gameplay.
The handheld also includes a new transforming D-pad that can switch between four- and eight-direction modes based on the game. Asus has also added a glowing green Xbox button and replaced the old library button with a redesigned action button, making it easier to access screenshots and recordings.
Exclusive Bundle Includes AR Gaming Glasses
One of the most surprising announcements is that the ROG Xbox Ally X20 will come bundled with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition AR glasses. The glasses connect via USB-C and can generate a virtual 171-inch display with a refresh rate of 240Hz and ultra-low latency, providing a unique large-screen gaming experience on the go.

At the moment, Asus has not confirmed whether the handheld will be sold separately from the AR glasses bundle.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 Price and Release Date
While Asus confirmed that the ROG Xbox Ally X20 will be available later this year, the company has not provided an official release date or pricing information.
Given that the existing ROG Xbox Ally X costs $999.99 and the included AR glasses sell for hundreds of dollars on their own, industry observers anticipate that the X20 bundle will target the premium end of the handheld gaming market.
For gamers looking for the most advanced Xbox handheld to date, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 could be one of the most exciting portable gaming devices of 2026. With its OLED display, upgraded controls, and futuristic AR gaming bundle, Asus appears to be targeting enthusiasts looking for a premium gaming experience wherever they go.
