Bandai Namco has officially revealed Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, a new RPG set on the popular anime universe. After teasing the announcement earlier this week, the publisher revealed that the game will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on July 10.

The upcoming title offers a new twist to the series. Instead of stepping into the shoes of familiar characters like Kirito, players will build their own personalized hero and explore the dangerous realm of Aincrad from an entirely different perspective.

Echoes of Aincrad New Story Inside the Floating Castle

Echoes of Aincrad takes place within the iconic floating castle, where thousands of players are trapped in a virtual reality game that quickly turns into a battle for survival. Players will take control of their own character, one of many individuals attempting to escape the deadly world floor by floor.

The official description sets the tone: what starts out as a dream adventure quickly becomes a desperate battle against powerful enemies and dangerous environments. Players must decide whether to rise to the challenge and survive, or to fall when confronted with enemies far stronger than they could have imagined.

Build Your Own Playstyle

Echoes of Aincrad places an major focus on customization. Players can customize their hero's abilities by changing their weapons, equipment, statistics, and special skills.

Whether you prefer speed, intelligence, or endurance, the game lets you create a character that suits your fighting style. As you progress, leveling up unlocks new abilities and strengthens your character, allowing you to face increasingly difficult threats across Aincrad.

Fight Alongside an AI Partner

While Echoes of Aincrad is primarily a single-player experience, players will not fight alone. The game includes an AI partner system that allows you to team up with a companion in combat.

Bandai Namco claims that players can improve their synergy with this partner by adjusting tactics, upgrading their gear, and developing teamwork strategies that can turn difficult fights into victories. The exact depth of this system has not yet been revealed, but it appears to be an important component of the gameplay.

Explore the World of Aincrad

The game will take place in a variety of environments throughout the floating castle. Players will discover open plains, villages, caves, and dangerous dungeons teeming with secrets and powerful enemies.

The experience will revolve heavily around exploration. As the map expands in together with the story, players can complete quests, find out rare loot, and discover hidden areas. Each new section of Aincrad introduces more difficult enemies and new challenges.

Visually, Echoes of Aincrad retains the anime-inspired style seen in previous Sword Art Online games, combining cel-shaded characters and detailed environments.

Echoes of Aincrad Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses

Bandai Namco also confirmed multiple editions of the game. Players will be able to choose between Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate, and Aincrad Editions. Those who pre-order the game will receive a weapon pack, while higher-tier editions include additional armor sets and other bonuses.

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad launches July 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
