Bungie has acknowledged that a recent gameplay change in Marathon may have gone too far. Following strong player feedback, the studio confirmed that it intends to partially reverse the controversial change in an upcoming update.
The problem comes about the game's version 1.0.0.4 update, which was released on March 11 and included several gameplay changes. The patch included several improvements, such as weapon balancing changes, reduced visual clarity for thermal scopes, and increased starting ammunition in some loadout kits.
However, a minor change in the patch notes quickly became the most discussed update. Bungie increased the distance at which gunfire and explosions can be heard, allowing players to detect combat from far away on the map.
Marathon Update Increased Gunfire Audio Range
The patch increased the distance from which gunfire and explosions can be heard on the map. Although the change appeared minor in the patch notes, it had a significant impact on gameplay. Players immediately discovered that firing a weapon could betray their location to teams much further away than previously.
After the update was released, many players complained that a single gunshot appeared to alert multiple squads on the map. Instead of slower, tactical exploration, matches quickly turned into chaotic fights. Some players reported that their squads were constantly attacked before they had time to gather loot.
Bungie Admits the Marathon Change Was an “Overcorrection”
Bungie responded to the complaints, admitting that the change may have gone too far. According to the studio, the goal was to increase players' awareness of nearby combat via audio cues. However, the increased range made firefights much easier to detect.
Joe Ziegler, the game director of Marathon confirmed the team is already working on adjustments.
The forthcoming patch will lower the audio range, making it more natural while still allowing players to hear nearby fights. Bungie also encouraged players to continue providing feedback as the studio works to improve Marathon ahead of launch.
