Capcom has released a new overview trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, providing the most detailed look yet at the upcoming action game. The three-minute video, which debuted during the most recent Capcom Spotlight presentation, provides fans with a more in-depth look at the game's story, characters, combat mechanics, and haunting world.
Originally revealed in 2024, the new Onimusha quickly drew attention for an unusual but intriguing choice: the game's protagonist, legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, is based on the late Japanese film icon Toshiro Mifune.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword follows legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi through a dark fantasy version of Kyoto from Japan's Edo period. In the story, Musashi is defeated while fighting supernatural enemies known as the Genma. However, he is revived by the mysterious Oni Gauntlet, which grants him the ability to fight back against the demonic forces that threaten the land.
With this new power, Musashi begins a revenge-driven journey against the Genma while encountering new allies and familiar rivals along the way, including his well-known opponent Ganryu Sasaki.
One of the game's most distinguishing features is its representation of Musashi. Capcom licensed the likeness of legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune to bring the iconic swordsman alive. Mifune, who died nearly 30 years ago, was best known for his roles in classic films like Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Throne of Blood, and The Hidden Fortress.
The new trailer also focuses on the game's combat system. Players will use Musashi's sword to strike, block, and parry enemies, with this stages putting more value on precise parrying than previous entries in the series. When enemies are weakened, players can activate the Break Issen mechanic, which allows Musashi to instantly finish them off with a devastating dismembering strike. As in previous Onimusha titles, enemies will drop Orbs that Musashi can absorb to restore health and improve his abilities.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
