Destiny 2 fans will need to be patient as the highly anticipated addition, The Final Shape has been officially delayed. Originally scheduled for February 27, 2024, the expansion will instead be released on June 4, 2024.
The Final Shape, according to a message claimed to the game's development team and published on Monday, is the culmination of the first decade of Destiny storytelling and the countless hours Guardians have spent together. The team is devoting more effort to developing a more expansive and bold concept that they hope will be remembered for years to come.
This delay naturally raises concerns regarding the release schedule. The Season of the Wish which begins tomorrow, will be continued until the June release of The Final Shape. While the majority of Season of the Wish's content and narrative will continue as planned, the team is delivering additional content for all players to engage with until the expansion's release. This features weekly progression-based tasks, Moments of Triumph, Guardian Games, and Destiny 2: Into the Light, a two-month content release.
While delays may not be fun for players, Bungie expressed excitement about the extra time to realise their vision despite the excitement surrounding The Final Shape. In April, more information will be released, including substantial content updates and new gameplay.
The news is consistent with recent rumours that Bungie's upcoming major game, Marathon, may not launch until 2025. Approximately 8% of the staff at Sony Interactive Entertainment's Bungie division was laid off last month. Internal delays were also mentioned in reports for Marathon and The Final Shape.
Employees at Bungie were alerted in October that income for the year had fallen 45 percent short of expectations, which they attributed to Destiny 2's low user retention. The company intends to switch from the present seasonal format to an episodic one after The Final Shape is released.
