Diablo 5 Announced for Spring 2029
Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5, the next mainline entry in its popular action RPG franchise, with a spring 2029 release date.
The surprise announcement came during BlizzCon 2026's opening ceremony, when Blizzard revealed a darker direction for the series. Unlike previous Diablo games, players will not start by attempting to prevent Diablo from conquering Sanctuary. This time, the Lord of Terror has already won.
Diablo 5 is set approximately 100 years after the events of Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred and will transport players to a devastated Sanctuary free of traditional heroes and safe havens.
“Diablo has won,” designer Joe Shely said during the announcement, explaining that players will enter a world already controlled by the Lord of Terror.
Diablo 5 will also change how players navigate the world. Instead of using familiar towns as permanent bases, players will travel with a caravan that expands throughout the adventure.
The caravan's characters will reportedly play much larger roles, with some becoming integral to the game's side quests and story. Blizzard also revealed that a Treasure Goblin will accompany the caravan, giving one of the franchise's most recognizable creatures a unique new role.
Outside the caravan, Diablo 5 will feature a world and dungeons with procedurally generated elements, making exploration more unpredictable and different for players. Blizzard is expected to share more details about the game during a dedicated Diablo 5 panel at BlizzCon.
The six-year gap between Diablo 4 and Diablo 5 would also be the shortest time between numbered games in the series. Diablo 3 arrived about 12 years after Diablo 2, and Diablo 4 followed Diablo 3 about 11 years later.
For the time being, Blizzard has only confirmed a Spring 2029 launch window, leaving plenty of time for additional announcements.
