According to a new report, The Walt Disney Company is considering acquiring Epic Games though discussions appear to be ongoing. According to industry insiders, Disney executives are split on whether such a move would be a bold step forward—or a costly risk.
The speculation comes at a time of significant change for Epic, following the layoff of over 1,000 employees due to a slowdown in Fortnite engagement. As part of its overall restructuring efforts, the company removed a number of game modes, including Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage.
Despite recent challenges, Disney and Epic already have a strong and growing relationship. Fortnite has hosted a number of crossover events involving Disney-owned franchises, while Epic's Unreal Engine continues to power production workflows in film and television, including projects related to Star Wars.
In 2024 Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games, acquiring an equity stake and announcing plans to create a persistent digital universe linked to Fortnite that combines gaming, storytelling, and social experiences.
Industry reporter Alex Heath claims there is real internal momentum behind a potential deal, even if not everyone at Disney is on board.
“Senior Disney executives are reportedly interested in acquiring Epic Games and are waiting for the right opportunity,” Heath said. “If Epic ever chose to give up its independence, Disney would be one of the most natural homes for it.”
However, sources indicate that not all decision-makers agree, with some expressing concerns about the risks associated with the gaming industry and Epic's recent restructuring.
Kevin Mayer, a former Disney executive and former CEO of TikTok, has also stated on the overall strategy.
Mayer believes that Epic Games—or a similar major gaming company—would be a valuable addition to Disney’s growing portfolio.
Any potential deal would ultimately be decided by Tim Sweeney, who retains full voting control over Epic Games. As a privately held company, Epic's future direction is entirely in his hands, making any acquisition scenario heavily dependent on his long-term vision.
Despite a reported drop in engagement, Fortnite is still one of the most influential platforms for younger audiences, serving as both a game and a social hub. Epic has been promoting a creator-driven ecosystem, similar to Roblox Corporation, in which users can create and share their own experiences.
There is no official word that Disney is buying Epic Games, but the rumors highlight how important gaming has become in entertainment. For the time being, Disney and Epic are still working together, and it is unclear whether this collaboration will lead to a full acquisition.
