Square Enix has officially announced the next major chapter for its flagship MMORPG, Final Fantasy 14 Online, including a brand-new expansion called Evercold and long-awaited plans to bring the game to Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 console. The announcement was made during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026, delivering both excitement and a few surprises to players.

Evercold, set to release in January 2027, is the start of a new narrative arc known as the Godless Realms Saga. According to producer and director Naoki Yoshida, the expansion is intended to take the game into a new phase, both in terms of storytelling and gameplay mechanics.

One of the main features is a significant overhaul of the battle system. Players will be able to choose between two different modes:

  • Reborn Mode maintains the current combat structure and familiar job mechanics.

  • Evolved Mode, a new system that focuses on stronger job identity and introduces deeper customization

Notably, all new jobs introduced in Evercold will be limited to Evolved Mode, indicating a clear shift towards a more specialized and strategic combat experience.

The expansion will also increase the level cap from 100 to 110 and add an array of new content, such as cities, regions, dungeons, raids, and powerful enemies. Players can expect new allies, more character customization, PvP updates, and enhancements to progression systems like seasonal rewards and the armory system.

Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 Release Confirmed

In a long-awaited move, Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 14 Online will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, allowing more players to join the popular MMO. However, there is a catch: unlike other platforms where one subscription works across all devices, Switch 2 players will need to purchase a separate subscription, a change caused by platform-specific requirements agreed upon with Nintendo.

However, there are a few concessions that soften the impact:

  • Players will not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play.

  • Existing subscribers from other platforms will get a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription.

This change may disappoint long-time players who're used to seamless cross-platform access, but it allows a new audience to discover the game.

Square Enix also announced that Final Fantasy 14 Online will have an early access period before launching on the Nintendo Switch 2, allowing players to try the game for free while developers test servers and resolve any issues. A brief demo of the game running on the new console revealed little, raising questions about how well such a large and complex MMO will perform.

With Evercold, Square Enix hopes to take Final Fantasy 14 Online in a new direction by introducing a new story, updated gameplay, and support for new hardware. It feels like an important step forward, and for both longtime players and newcomers, the coming year could be one of the most important and exciting periods in the game's history.
