The future of additional story content for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy remains uncertain. According to series director Naoki Hamaguchi the possibility of DLC for the final installment is largely dependent on how strongly fans support the game after its release.

The long-running reimagining of the classic RPG franchise continues to evolve under Square Enix, and while the second chapter provided a massive experience, story expansions were clearly missing. Now the focus is on what comes next—and whether additional content will follow.

No DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: A Strategic Decision

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released as the second major chapter in the trilogy, but unlike the first it received no additional story DLC after release. Players hoping for more content were disappointed because there were no follow-up expansions this time.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that DLC was seriously considered during development, but it was dropped so that the team could focus on the third and final installment. The main priority was to avoid delays and ensure that the trilogy ended smoothly and with high quality.

Focus Shifted to the Final Chapter

According to Hamaguchi, even before full planning for Rebirth's DLC began the development team realized that splitting resources between post-launch content and the next game would put the overall schedule at risk.

According to him, the decision was based on a simple goal: deliver the final installment faster and with more polish rather than expanding the team across multiple parallel projects.

This approach fits in with Square Enix overall strategy of treating the trilogy as a single long-term narrative experience rather than three standalone releases with distinct content pipelines.

What about the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Upgrade?

The first game in the trilogy Final Fantasy 7 Remake later got an expanded version called Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which also included a story DLC called Episode Intermission. It added new content and gave players extra story to enjoy.

This upgrade also made the PS5 version feel like the best way to play the game. Because of this, fans expected similar DLC for later games, but the approach has changed for the sequel.

Could Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth still get DLC?

While Rebirth continued without additions, Hamaguchi has not totally ruled out DLC for the third installment—or even beyond it.

Instead, he emphasizes that it will be determined by one factor: fan demand.

If players continue to support the franchise, additional content may become a viable option after the trilogy concludes. However, nothing has been confirmed, and the focus remains on finishing the final game first.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Expands to More Platforms

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was first released on PlayStation 5 in February 2024. It will now be available on additional platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, on June 3, allowing even more players to enjoy it. Before the full release, a demo is already available on these platforms, allowing players to experience the game's early chapters.

For the time being, the developers are focused on completing the third and final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy with no delays or quality compromises. Their primary goal is to finish the story smoothly.

However, they have not ruled out additional DLC. If fans express strong interest, additional story content may be considered after the trilogy concludes. For the time being, all attention is focused on how the final game will conclude this iconic story.
