Microsoft officially kicked off the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 with one of the year's biggest announcements, revealing new gameplay footage for Gears of War: E-Day and confirming its long-anticipated release date. The highly anticipated prequel will be released for Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 6, 2026, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
The showcase began with an intense gameplay trailer of a younger Marcus Fenix fighting through the chaos of Emergence Day, the catastrophic event that confirmed the arrival of the Locust Horde. The footage featured brutal combat, massive destruction, and a darker look at the origins of one of Xbox's most recognizable franchises.
Gears of War: E-Day Brings the Series Back to Its Roots
Gears of War: E-Day, developed by The Coalition, takes players back before the events of the original game. The plot follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they deal with the first Locust invasion while facing personal loss and the collapse of civilization around them.
Built entirely in Unreal Engine 5, the game represents a significant visual improvement for the series. The presentation featured improved lighting, detailed character models, realistic animations, and larger environments. According to the development team, E-Day is the first Gears title created without reusing assets from previous entries, with each character, weapon, enemy, animation, and environment built from the ground up.
Gears of War: E-Day Introduces Faster Combat and Co-Op Gameplay
The latest gameplay footage showed multiple improvements to the classic Gears formula. Movement appears to be faster and more fluid, with characters able to climb obstacles, leap across gaps, and navigate battlefields more dynamically than in previous entries.
Fans can also look forward to the return of the iconic Lancer assault rifle and chainsaw bayonet, which deliver the series' signature brutal close-range combat. The Coalition also confirmed that the campaign can be played solo, in two-player split-screen co-op, or with up to four people online.
Xbox Confirms No PS5 Release
One of the biggest surprises of the event was Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's confirmation that Gears of War: E-Day will remain exclusive to the Xbox console. While the game will be available on PC and Xbox Series X|S, it will not be released on PlayStation 5.

The announcement brings an end to months of speculation that Microsoft might continue to expand its first-party lineup onto competing platforms. Recent rumors suggested that a PlayStation 5 version was being considered, but Xbox has now officially ruled that out.
Players will have the opportunity to test Gears of War: E-Day prior to its release. Microsoft has confirmed that the first open beta weekend will begin on August 6, giving fans the opportunity to test the game's multiplayer experience and get an early look at its new features. The beta will also highlight the game's improved visuals and Unreal Engine 5 technology.
Gears of War: E-Day, with a focus on the Gears saga's origins, improved gameplay mechanics, and the return of Marcus and Dom, is shaping up to be one of Xbox's most anticipated releases of 2026. The game will be released on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass right away.
