In an alarming turn of events renowned game developer Insomniac Games, known for the critically acclaimed Spider-Man series has reportedly been the target of a cyberattack. The threat involves the potential disclosure of secret information about the company, its employees, and potential game developments.
According to Cyber Daily a ransomware organisation called as Rhysida claims to have effectively hacked the Sony-owned studio's defences. The hackers back up their claim by posting a set of data online, including an annotated screenshot from Insomniac's next Wolverine game. There are also artworks hinting at the inclusion of other Marvel heroes in the highly anticipated PS5 release.
The Rhysida group is now playing a risky game, threatening to reveal the stolen data within seven days. Simultaneously, they are holding an auction for the compromised information, with the starting offer set at 50 Bitcoins, or about $2 million. The group declared,
"With just 7 days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data. Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling; you will be the only owner!"
Insomniac's Wolverine game which was revealed in September 2021 alongside the recently released Spider-Man 2 is currently facing leaks. Despite the fact that the game's production status was described as "very early" at the time of its announcement, it is situated in the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man franchise. Wolverine is being marketed as a stand-alone film directed by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, who both worked on Miles Morales.
According to rumours Sony is planning to release the game in either the fall of 2024 or the spring of 2025. The cyberattack on Insomniac Games adds uncertainty and fear to both the studio and fans eagerly awaiting the next installment in the Marvel-inspired game universe.
