Killzone Could Be Coming Back After 13 Years

Killzone may finally be returning to PlayStation after more than a decade away. According to a new report, Sony is looking into a new project based on the long-dormant sci-fi shooter franchise, which could include a remaster, remake, or even a full reboot.

According to MP1st, the project is still in its early stages of development. Guerrilla Games, the studio behind the original Killzone series, is reportedly working with an external development team. Sony has not officially announced the project, so fans should treat it as a rumor for the time being.

The timing would be important. Killzone was once one of PlayStation's most iconic shooter franchises, released with the original game on PlayStation 2 in 2004. Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 were released on PlayStation 3 before the series made the jump to PlayStation 4 with Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013. That last entry remains the franchise's final major release.

Following Shadow Fall, Guerrilla shifted its focus to Horizon Zero Dawn, which led the studio in a completely different direction. The Horizon series eventually became a major PlayStation property, and KilAlzone went silent for years.

As a result, a return could differ considerably from the games fans remember. If the reported project is a remake, Sony could update the original Killzone with modern graphics, smoother controls, and new gameplay. Instead, a remaster could preserve the classic experience while improving presentation on modern consoles.

There is also speculation that the project will turn into a reboot, giving PlayStation the opportunity to reinvent the franchise for a new generation.

Nothing is official yet, but the possibility of Killzone returning after 13 years is enough to reintroduce the Helghast to PlayStation fans' radar.
