Ubisoft has confirmed that production on the much-anticipated live-action adaptation of Assassin's Creed has begun. The upcoming Netflix series will transport fans to an era they have long desired: Ancient Rome.
According to the announcement, the story takes place in 64 AD, a pivotal period in Roman history marked by the devastating Great Fire of Rome. The event cut through much of the city, destroying large parts of Rome over several days. In the aftermath, Emperor Nero infamously blamed Christians, causing widespread persecution throughout the empire. This chaotic backdrop is expected to play an important role in shaping the show's storyline.
While Assassin's Creed fans have long desired a game set in Ancient Rome, this series marks the franchise's first major move into that era. As with previous entries, the plot will revolve around a hidden dispute between two shadowy factions, combining real-world events with fictional narrative.
Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew lead the show's impressive ensemble cast. Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Zachary Hart, Nabhaan Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, and Sean Harris will all perform. The large cast suggests a multifaceted story that could delve into various aspects of Roman society during one of its darkest periods.

Behind the scenes, the series is being directed by Emmy-nominated creators Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who have previously worked on Westworld and Halo. The project was officially approved in July 2025 and has since gained momentum.
Netflix previously described the adaptation as a "high-octane thriller" about the ongoing conflict between hidden factions. However, beyond the action, the creators has highlighted a deeper focus on human stories, delving into themes such as identity, faith, power, and connection across cultures and time.
With filming underway and a new historical setting in the works, the Assassin's Creed series may finally deliver a new take on the franchise outside of gaming. While there is no set release date, this is shaping up to be one of Netflix's greatest video game adaptations yet.
