Nintendo has officially announced a new Star Fox game for the Nintendo Switch 2, reuniting Fox McCloud and the legendary Star Fox team for the first time in years. The game, simply titled Star Fox, will be released worldwide on June 25. It reimagines the beloved Nintendo 64 classic with modern visuals, expanded storytelling, and new multiplayer features.

The announcement came during a surprise Nintendo Direct presentation hosted by legendary Nintendo creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi, and it quickly became one of the year's most anticipated gaming announcements.

A Modern Reimagining of Star Fox 64

Nintendo confirmed that the new Star Fox is a complete remake of Star Fox 64, optimized for the power of the Nintendo Switch 2. While the iconic on-rails space combat gameplay is back, the experience has been significantly expanded with improved mechanics, cinematic storytelling, and multiplayer options.

Players will once again pilot the Arwing through familiar locations such as Corneria, Sector Y, and Fichina, battling the evil forces that threaten the Lylat System. Fan-favorite vehicles like the Landmaster tank and Blue-Marine submarine are also returning.

According to Nintendo, the core stage layouts remain unchanged from the original game but each environment has been visually redesigned from the ground up with modern graphics and cinematic presentation.

Star Fox 64 New story and Fully Voiced Cutscenes

One of the most significant additions is an expanded narrative with newly created cutscenes and deeper character interactions. Nintendo revealed that the remake will feature a brand-new prologue mission centered on Fox McCloud's father, adding new backstory to the Star Fox universe.

The game will include fully voiced dialogue, updated character designs, and a sweeping orchestral soundtrack to give the adventure a more cinematic feel than ever before.

According to Nintendo, the remake will allow players to get deeper into the relationships between Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy, and rival team Star Wolf via newly added scenes throughout the campaign.

Switch 2 Features Include Mouse Controls and Co-Op Play

Nintendo is introducing several new gameplay features created specifically for the Switch 2. One of the most major improvements is the new Joy-Con mouse controls, which allow players to aim more accurately and move more smoothly during space battles.

The game also supports local co-op, which allows two players to share a Joy-Con setup. One player controls the Arwing, and the other handles the weapons. For longtime fans, Nintendo is also supporting the classic Nintendo 64 controller, which restores the game's retro feel.

Multiple Difficulty Modes for Each Player

The campaign mode has three difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Nintendo confirmed that Hard mode removals continue after a Game Over, providing a more difficult experience for experienced players.

A separate Challenge Mode includes replayable missions with unique objectives that are not found in the main campaign. An additional Expert difficulty option will be available for experienced pilots looking for the most difficult battles.

The classic Battle Mode from Star Fox 64 is returning with new online multiplayer features. Players can join Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf and battle across different maps inspired by the original game.

Each arena offers a different challenge. Corneria focuses on zone control, Fichina has players collecting energy crystals while dodging meteors, and Sector Y is based on gathering cargo in space battles. Players can join online matches, private rooms, or play together using GameShare and GameChat.

Nintendo also unveiled a fun new AR avatar feature for GameChat. During online chats and multiplayer sessions, players can use filters to transform themselves into Star Fox characters such as Fox McCloud and Slippy Toad.

The new Star Fox marks the series' return after many years. With upgraded graphics, new story content, and online multiplayer, Nintendo puts the game as one of the most awaited Switch 2 releases.
