Nintendo has officially announced that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, its upcoming side-scrolling platformer for the Nintendo Switch 2, will be released on Thursday, May 21.
The announcement was made alongside a new trailer released in honor of Mario Day March 10. The video provides the most detailed look yet at the game's whimsical gameplay, watercolor-inspired graphic style, and various new aspects that distinguish it from past Yoshi titles.
The game which was first unveiled during a Nintendo Direct in September 2025, follows Yoshi as he explores the pages of a magical book known as Mr. E (Mister Encyclopedia). Each level takes place within the book, with surroundings designed to be like living storybook pages.
The gameplay remains a 2D platforming adventure, but the new title features deeper interactions with the creatures found in each stage. Some of these creatures can even assist Yoshi travel to new places.
In the trailer, a bubble-spitting creature in the Wildwoods area creates floating bubbles that Yoshi can use as platforms to climb higher and explore hidden paths.
The game also features a discovery system. When Yoshi meets a new creature, Mr. E asks players to name it, or players can let the book choose a name automatically. The creatures are then added to the encyclopedia. Each discovery rewards stars, which help players progress through the story by unlocking new pages and levels.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book launches May 21 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
