Capcom has officially confirmed the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the legendary samurai action series' first new installment in over 20 years. The highly anticipated action-adventure game will be released on September 25, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The announcement came during Sony's June 2026 State of Play presentation, where Capcom appeared a new gameplay trailer featuring intense sword combat, brutal enemy encounters, and stunning visuals inspired by feudal Japan. Along with the release date announcement, Capcom surprised fans by releasing a playable demo, allowing them to experience the game months before it was officially released.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Brings a New Samurai Journey
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in a dark fantasy version of Edo-era Kyoto and follows legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as he battles supernatural forces that threaten the region. The most recent trailer shown the mysterious Mount Oe area and introduced players to the terrifying boss Shuten Doji, a towering demon who promises to be one of the game's most difficult encounters.
The footage also showcased the series' trademark combination of fast-paced swordplay and supernatural action. Players can use advanced combat techniques like parries, deflections, the powerful Issen counterattack system, soul absorption mechanics, and devastating Oni-powered abilities.

Players are not required to wait until September to participate in the action. Capcom has released a free demo for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
The demo includes an early section of the game set in Kyoto's iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Players will battle demonic enemies while learning the game's combat systems before taking on Musashi's formidable rival, Sasaki Ganryu, in a dramatic showdown.
The demo provides an early look at the game's combat depth and visual presentation, allowing both longtime fans and newcomers to see how the popular franchise is evolving for modern hardware.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Pre-Orders Now Available
Capcom has also opened pre-orders for Onimusha: Way of the Sword on all platforms. The game comes in three editions:
Standard Edition ($69.99)
Deluxe Edition ($79.99).
Premium Deluxe Edition ($89.99)
Players who pre-order the game will receive exclusive in-game bonus content upon release.
The Onimusha franchise which debuted in 2001 became one of Capcom's most popular action series. However, fans have been waiting nearly 20 years for a completely new mainline entry. With modern visuals, refined combat mechanics, and a new story centered on Miyamoto Musashi, Onimusha: Way of the Sword aims to introduce the franchise to a new generation while remaining true to its classic roots.
