Sony is planning a significant update to how players access communication features on PlayStation, with mandatory age verification set to go live later in 2026. The move will first affect users in the United Kingdom and Ireland, before spreading to other parts of the world.
According to notifications sent directly to PlayStation 5 consoles and emails shared with users, players will soon be required to confirm their age in order to continue using features like voice chat, messaging, and party interactions. Those who finish the process early can avoid disruptions when the requirement becomes mandatory.
What’s Changing for PlayStation Users?
The upcoming system will limit access to communication tools unless a user's age is verified. Core gaming features, such as access to purchased titles, trophies, and the PlayStation Store, will remain available even if a user does not verify.
However, skipping the verification step will place restrictions. Affected features are:
Voice and text chat
Party and group sessions
Broadcasting gameplay to platforms like YouTube and Twitch
Integration with third-party communication tools such as Discord
In some cases, individual games with their own chat systems or user-generated content may also limit interaction if verification is not completed.
When Will It Take Effect?
According to Sony's support documentation, implementation will begin around June 2026 for users in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Adult account holders who have not verified their age will lose access to communication features until they complete the process.
How Age Verification Works
Sony has worked with Yoti, a privacy-focused digital identity company, to carry out verification. Players will be given several options, including:
Face recognition scan
Uploading a valid ID.
Verifying with a mobile number.
The process is intended to be quick and only done once per account.
Why is Sony making this move?
The change coincides with growing global pressure on tech companies to create safer online environments, particularly for younger users. The UK's Online Safety Act has imposed stricter requirements for age-appropriate digital experiences, prompting platforms to implement stronger verification systems.
Sony says the goal is to strike a balance between safety and user privacy while giving players and parents more control over their online interactions.
Sony is not the only company moving in this direction; others in the gaming and technology industries are also increasing age checks. Xbox began adding age verification features in 2025, while Roblox used identity checks for chat earlier this year. Discord has also been testing a similar system, though its wider rollout has been postponed for now. At the same time, governments are getting involved particularly in the United States, where a proposed law known as the "Parents Decide Act" would require age verification even at the operating system level, indicating that stricter digital safety rules may soon become the norm.
For the time being, PlayStation users in the United Kingdom and Ireland can quickly verify their age by scanning a QR code on their console. The website may be a little slow due to high traffic, but the process is only a few minutes. As Sony plans to expand this system worldwide, players in other regions will most likely face the same requirement in the near future. While exact dates have yet to be confirmed, it is clear that age verification is becoming a common practice in gaming.
