Sony is releasing a significant update to its PlayStation 5 Pro visual technology this week, with a new version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) arriving in a growing number of major titles. The update is part of the most recent PS5 system software release and aims to provide sharper visuals, smoother motion, and more stable performance across supported games.
Big Games Getting the PSSR Upgrade
The improved PSSR tech is being added to several high-profile titles, including:
Monster Hunter Wilds
Silent Hill F
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Alan Wake 2
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Rise of the Ronin
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
More games are already confirmed to follow. Crimson Desert will support the upgraded PSSR at launch, while updates for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 are expected in the coming weeks.
What Is PSSR and Why It Matters
PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology, designed specifically for the PS5 Pro. In simple terms, it allows games to render at a lower internal resolution and then upscale to near-4K quality without sacrificing performance.

With this new update, Sony has improved the underlying AI model and reconstruction algorithm. The result is:
Sharper fine details (like textures, hair, and text)
Reduced flickering and ghosting
Better motion clarity in fast scenes
More stable image quality overall
This upgrade is especially important for players who want high-quality visuals without sacrificing smooth frame rates, which are one of the PS5 Pro's main selling points.
The updated PSSR first appeared in Resident Evil Requiem, where early technical reviews were very positive. Experts noted that the game produces convincing 4K output while maintaining strong performance, with significantly improved edge clarity and detail reconstruction.
Developers are also seeing the benefits firsthand. According to the team behind Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the new version of PSSR restores fine visual details more naturally and reduces visual noise, creating a more immersive experience.
Similarly, Dragon Age: The Veilguard developers claim that the upgrade improves image quality while maintaining consistent frame rates in both performance and fidelity modes.
As modern games push heavier features like ray tracing, massive open worlds, and detailed assets, technologies like PSSR become increasingly important. They enable studios to maintain smooth gameplay while providing high-resolution visuals. Sony has also added a system-level option that allows players to enable enhanced PSSR behavior even in games that have not yet received dedicated patches, though the results may differ.
The update began rolling out in phases starting March 16, with more games expected to adopt the improved PSSR in the coming weeks.
