Resident Evil Requiem DLSS 5 Backlash: Capcom Responds to AI Visual Controversy

The debate over Resident Evil Requiem has heated up following its controversial showcase featuring NVIDIA DLSS 5 with fans raising concerns about how AI-driven visuals will affect the game's artistic identity. When the demo first debuted earlier this year, many players pointed out obvious changes to protagonist Grace, claiming that the AI enhancements made her look drastically different from her original design. The backlash quickly spread throughout the gaming community, transforming what was supposed to be a technical showcase into a larger debate about preserving creative intent in modern game development.
Speaking with Eurogamer, producer Masato Kumazawa addressed the reaction without directly confirming Capcom's involvement in the demo. Instead, he saw the criticism as a positive signal noting that the strong fan attachment to Grace's original appearance shows the design team's success in creating a memorable character. According to him, the fact that players objected so strongly suggests that Grace has already become a fan favorite, which is something every developer aims for when introducing a new protagonist.
DLSS 5, which was released in March represents a major development in AI-assisted rendering, promising "photoreal lighting and materials" by utilizing neural rendering techniques at a deeper level than traditional upscaling. Unlike previous versions, this technology can change geometry and visual composition rather than just sharpening frames. However, this capability has raised concerns that such tools if not carefully managed could override a game's intended art style.
The criticism has not been limited to fans. Steve Karolewics, an industry expert, also spoke out, describing the technology as visually overprocessed and inconsistent with the original artistic direction. On the other hand, Jensen Huang defended the system emphasizing that developers have complete control over how the AI is used. He explained that DLSS 5 is not just post-processing, but a type of "neural rendering," which allows studios to fine-tune results to their specifications.
Despite the mixed reception, DLSS 5 is still set to release later this year in a number of major titles, including Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, EA Sports FC, and Assassin's Creed Shadows. Early impressions suggest that, while some games benefit from technological advances, others struggle to maintain their original look and feel.
For Capcom, the takeaway is clear: player feedback is important, especially when it comes to beloved characters. As development progresses, the studio will likely approach AI-powered features with cautiously, ensuring that innovation does not come at the expense of identity.
