After months of silence, Asobo Studio has finally broken cover with an exciting update on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and it appears that the long wait will soon be over. According to a new developer blog published by Focus Entertainment, the third installment in the popular Plague Tale series has reached the final stages of development, with the team now focusing on polishing and preparing for release.

The project which was first revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, has remained largely unknown until now. The most recent update confirms that the studio is working on testing, balancing, and refining gameplay systems, as well as finalizing voice recordings and musical scoring. In short, the finish line is within sight.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Story

Unlike its predecessors, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy shifts the focus away from Amicia and Hugo and instead delves into the past of a fan favorite side character, Sophia. Sophia, first introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem, was a mysterious smuggler who helped the protagonists on their journey. However, her backstory went largely unexplored.

This new chapter takes place 15 years before the events of Requiem, diving into Sophia's origins, struggles, and rise in a dangerous Mediterranean setting. The developers describe her as a "spirited and determined" character who has always deserved her own story—and she is finally getting it.

The Plague Tale franchise has established a solid reputation for emotional storytelling and atmospheric world-building. It all started with A Plague Tale: Innocence, which transported players to a bleak 14th-century France destroyed by disease and war. The game's captivating story and stealth-driven gameplay received widespread acclaim and high review scores.

Requiem the sequel built on that foundation in 2022, providing a more ambitious and emotional conclusion to Amicia and Hugo's journey. Rather than continuing the storyline, Asobo is now taking a more strategic approach: expanding the universe from a new perspective.

A More Action-Oriented Experience?

Focusing on Sophia could indicate a subtle shift in gameplay direction. Sophia, unlike the vulnerable siblings from previous titles, is an experienced smuggler and survivor. This paves the way for faster-paced encounters and more dynamic combat scenarios, potentially changing the series' traditionally slow, stealth-focused design.

At the same time, the studio takes care to preserve what fans value most: a deeply emotional core. Early indications suggest that beneath Sophia's hardened exterior lies a complex and vulnerable character capable of delivering the series' trademark powerful storytelling.

Asobo describes this as a critical stage of development, with the team polishing gameplay and ensuring the experience is both challenging and memorable. They've also hinted at more updates coming soon, including a closer look at Sophia's character and an interview with her voice actor. The game is currently scheduled for release in 2026, most likely on Xbox Game Pass, though an exact date has yet to be announced. With development almost complete, more information should be released in the coming months.

With two more developer updates on the way and the game nearing completion, excitement is growing. If Asobo delivers, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy could not only expand the story, but also introduce some new gameplay elements. It's a good sign for fans because the next chapter in this dark and emotional world is almost here.
