After years of near-complete silence, State of Decay 3 is finally making headlines this time with more information about its development, missing features, and what players can expect in the future.

The zombie survival sequel, which was first revealed in 2020 set widespread excitement with a cinematic trailer that teased a darker world with infected wildlife. But, according to the developers, the early footage didn't represent an actual game in progress.

In a recent interview, studio head Philip Holt openly discussed the reality of the 2020 reveal. At the time, State of Decay 3 was still in its early conceptual stages.

“There really wasn’t a game or game team when we were working on that trailer,” Holt said.“The game was in a Word document.”

The reveal trailer created by a visual effects studio was entirely pre-rendered and intended to showcase ideas rather than gameplay. Holt explained that it represented what the team thought would be cool, rather than what was being developed at the time.

Following the initial announcement, there were few updates to the project. A second cinematic trailer was released in 2024, but it also lacked gameplay details.

The reason for the long gap is now clear: the studio had to build everything from the ground up. From assembling a full development team to defining the game's core systems, it took time before anything meaningful could be shown.

One of the most memorable aspects of the original trailer was the appearance of zombie animals, particularly the now-famous infected deer. However, that feature has been discontinued.

Holt confirmed that, while some ideas from the early concept remain in the game, others were cut.

“Some of those elements are going to persist,” he explained “and some of those things are just, like—we’re not doing zombie animals.”

The team decided to focus on making the core survival gameplay stronger instead of including experimental features.

Despite the changes, State of Decay 3 will maintain its core survival gameplay, in which players manage a group of survivors, gather resources, and build a community in a zombie world. This time, thanks to Unreal Engine 5 the game will feel larger and more realistic with improved visuals and deeper gameplay. It will also place a higher value on emotions as a permeation returns when a character dies, they are gone forever, and their loss will have a greater impact on the story and other survivors than before.

In a major sign of development progress, the studio has announced an upcoming alpha playtest in May. This is the first time the game will be tested in an active phase after years of pre-production and early development.

Excitement for State of Decay 3 is growing again, but there is no official release date, as developers have not shared that information since the game's initial announcement. However, with development now moving forward and more updates expected in 2026, many people believe the game will be released around 2027, though this has not been confirmed.

State of Decay 3 is shaping up to be a more wide immersive survival game with improved visuals and deeper storytelling. Although no release date has been set, the updates and upcoming alpha make the wait worthwhile.
