Shift Up has officially acquired Unbound, the new studio founded by industry legend Shinji Mikami, in an important step that has created excitement throughout the gaming world. The deal represents a significant collaboration between one of Korea's most promising developers and the creator of some of gaming's most iconic titles.
Mikami best known for pioneering the survival horror genre with Resident Evil and redefining action horror with Resident Evil 4, founded Unbound after leaving Tango Gameworks. Since its quiet inception, the Tokyo-based studio has been working behind the scenes on an original IP, with a growing team committed to providing a unique gaming experience.
According to the official announcement, the partnership is founded on shared creative values rather than business convenience.“What brings us together isn’t geography or market logic,” the company stated. “It’s a shared belief that strong creative vision and high-quality execution must go hand in hand."
Mikami expressed confidence in the collaboration by saying,
“I sense a strong creative synergy with Hyung-Tae Kim. This partnership allows us to fully focus on what matters most—creating truly enjoyable games for players.”
Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim shared that sentiment, adding:
“It’s deeply meaningful to join forces with a world-class developer like Shinji Mikami. Together, we aim to deliver top-tier gaming experiences and strengthen our global presence.”
Unbound is expected to go after a dual development strategy, working on both experimental smaller-scale titles and a large flagship project in parallel. This model aims to promote innovation without sacrificing ambition.
A teaser released alongside the announcement shows a towering, multi-winged creature standing over a ruined city, hinting at a potential return to darker, atmospheric storytelling.
While details are being kept under wraps, Shift Up and Mikami's collaboration marks a bold new chapter one that has the potential to redefine expectations for both studios and deliver something truly memorable to players around the world.
