Subnautica 2 early access release date has finally been confirmed after months of uncertainty and behind-the-scenes conflict. The highly anticipated underwater survival sequel will be released on May 14, giving fans their first chance to explore a brand-new alien ocean world—though the path to this point hasn't been easy.
The release date was announced by developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment, who also released a cinematic trailer that teases a new setting full of danger, mystery, and survival challenges. Early access begins at 8 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. ET / 4 p.m. BST, with a starting price of $29.99.
Set after the events of previous games, this new installment casts players as Alterra pioneers tasked with colonizing an unfamiliar planet. But, as expected in the Subnautica universe, things go wrong quickly. A malfunctioning AI propels the mission forward, leaving players stranded in a hostile underwater environment where survival requires exploration, resourcefulness, and adaptation.
Subnautica 2 Features and Gameplay
Unlike previous entries, Subnautica 2 features co-op multiplayer, allowing players to survive alongside one another for the first time in the series. Early previews also hint at a genetics-based progression system in which players can improve their abilities to better deal with the planet's harsh conditions.
The game was first revealed during the Xbox Partner Preview Event in October 2024, with a teaser confirming the new world and the addition of a second playable survivor.
Behind the Scenes: The Legal Battle
While excitement for the game grows, its development has been delayed by a conflict between Unknown Worlds and publisher Krafton. The conflict began when key studio executives, including CEO Ted Gill, were removed from their positions last year.

The situation escalated into a legal case, with former leadership claiming they were forced to leave in order to postpone the game and avoid triggering a significant financial bonus tied to its release. In an unexpected move, the Delaware Chancery Court ruled in favor of the former CEO, ordering his reinstatement and giving him control over the game's early access launch.
However, reports indicate that Krafton made internal announcements about the May release before Gill could formally take control, causing tension and confusion within the studio and its community.
What This Means for Players
Despite the controversy Subnautica 2 is progressing. Players who purchase the game during early access will receive all future updates, including the full 1.0 release, at no extra charge.
For fans, the launch represents both the continuation of one of the most beloved survival franchises and a fresh start for a studio dealing with internal issues. Early access will also allow the development team to fine-tune the experience based on player feedback, which has contributed significantly to previous titles' success.
While legal and leadership conflicts may have complicated the process Subnautica 2 is finally here. Whether it meets expectations will be determined not only by its ambitious new features, but also by the team's ability to stabilize and collaborate in the future.
For the time being, one thing is certain: the dive back into alien oceans will begin on May 14.
