The developers of The Last Caretaker have released a major new update that may change how players experience the game's entire world. The third major update since the game entered Early Access in November 2025, titled "Curiosity Wakes," introduces a long-awaited twist: humanity is no longer completely out of reach.
The update, which is available now on Steam and the Epic Games Store, takes the apocalyptic survival crafting game in a more story-driven direction while also expanding its core systems.
Until now, The Last Caretaker was defined by isolation. Players take control of a lone robot caretaker assigned with keeping what remains of humanity in a flooded, post-apocalyptic world. Your mission is to explore vast oceans, recover human "seeds," and deliver them to the Lazarus Complex a system designed to restore human memory and launch it into space in the hopes of saving the species.
With "Curiosity Wakes," that silence is broken.
For the first time, players can make contact with humanity's remote orbital refuge. It's a significant narrative shift that confirms a long-held fan theory: humanity hasn't vanished; it's been waiting.
The update, according to developer Channel37 marks a turning point. The ability to communicate with space is more than just a new mechanic; it alters the player's purpose and relationship to the world.
Along with the story expansion, the update introduces a range of gameplay improvements:
Contact with space: The caretaker can interact with the new Council of Humanity to build vital committees that shape the life on earth surface. These committees are populated by the very humans being launched into orbit. In this way, the committee system reveals one of the ultimate purposes of the player’s efforts.
New and Smarter threats: Ram Sharks, Laser Sharks, and ArchAngels join the world. Enemies spawn smarter and behave in more deliberate ways.
New story content: New quests and locations.
You’re not alone: unlock new support gameplay with the Sweetheart grenade, craftable Sweetheart item, and a new friendly swarm type.
New Caretaker customisation: change the look of your Caretaker with numerous paint options.
New locations, quests, items, and upgrades: including the Shark Research Area, Rollerboi Factory, discover long-forgotten facilities, unlock new modules, extract new resources, and evolve your Caretaker along new progression systems.
The Last Caretaker remains in Early Access, but updates like "Curiosity Wakes" demonstrate a clear commitment to expanding both gameplay and narrative depth. By combining survival mechanics with a slowly unfolding mystery about humanity's fate, the game is carving out a particular area in the genre.
For players who have already explored its lonely oceans or who are looking for a reason to do so this update could be a turning point.
