Ubisoft Acquires Amazon Games Montreal Team and MOBA March of Giants

Ubisoft has announced that it has acquired the development team behind the upcoming MOBA game, March of Giants. This is a major development for the game, which is still in progress, and also marks a significant comeback for some experienced Ubisoft developers. The deal involves Ubisoft taking over the entire team from Amazon Games Montreal, along with the rights to the game. Amazon will continue to support the game's marketing efforts through Twitch.

The financial details of the agreement were not shared, but Ubisoft confirmed that the studio, which was previously known as Amazon Games Montreal, will now be part of the Ubisoft family. The publisher will take charge of the game's development moving forward, while Amazon will remain involved in promoting the game.

March of Giants started its closed alpha testing on PC earlier this year. It is designed as a competitive multiplayer game aiming to make its mark in the busy MOBA market. With this acquisition, Ubisoft gains both the intellectual property and the experienced team that has already been working on the game for a while.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot welcomed the team's return, reflect their history of creating long-lasting, globally popular live-service and competitive games. Ubisoft stated that the March of Giants team will join a future “creative house,” a new internal setup aimed at encouraging innovation across all its studios.

Guillemot added that the team's ambition and experience closely match Ubisoft's vision for creating bold new IP.

“March of Giants has a real opportunity to bring something fresh and dynamic to players and help Ubisoft compete in one of gaming’s biggest arenas, We’re looking forward to welcoming back Alexandre, Xavier, and many of the seasoned March of Giants team who have previously worked at Ubisoft, and the entire team’s ambition, creativity and talent align perfectly with our desire to build bold new experiences for players. We look forward to supporting them as they shape the future of this promising new IP.”

Marquis shared that statement, referring to his return to Ubisoft as “full circle” and being hopeful about the publisher's ability to make the project better. Parizeau also thanked Amazon for supporting the game early on, pointing out that the closed beginning showed the game's promise and that joining Ubisoft brings the team together with a common long-term plan.

The move happens after recent changes at Amazon's gaming department, which involved big layoffs and ending a number of projects. Even with those changes, March of Giants had been listed as one of Amazon Games' future games, so moving to Ubisoft is a major step for the MOBA's future.
