WolfEye Studios, created by industry veterans Raphaël Colantonio and Julien Roby after leaving Arkane, has sparked rumors regarding their forthcoming project. Colantonio, known for his work on legendary titles such as Dishonored and Prey, used social networking platform X to drop cryptic hints about their next project—a first-person "retro sci-fi RPG."
The duo, who left Arkane in 2019 to form WolfEye Studios, are currently showing their new game concept at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. Colantonio's tweets provided hints about the game's nature, with terms like "retro sci-fi FPS" covering monitors and whiteboards, confirming the immersive first-person gameplay experience.
Colantonio's record at Arkane spans 18 years, where he held crucial roles as president and co-creative director, leading to the development of highly celebrated titles including Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Roby, who spent 11 years at Arkane, provides a wealth of knowledge, having worked on significant projects such as Borderlands: The Prequel and Mafia 3 before co-founding WolfEye.
WolfEye's first release, Weird West created waves in March 2022 with its dark fantasy take on the Wild West, which combined action RPG features with immersive simulation gameplay. The game received decent Metacritic scores, showing the studio's dedication to quality and creativity.
The studio's trajectory accelerated when it received investment from venture capital firm Galaxy Interactive, a move that CEO Roby regarded as essential to preserve their independence while driving their ambition for future projects. WolfEye plans to grow its outstanding workforce and continue creating unique experiences, including an ambitious new IP that has yet to be revealed, with the support of Galaxy Interactive.
As the gaming community quickly awaits more information, WolfEye's entry into the retro sci-fi RPG genre promises to fascinate gamers with its unique blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge gameplay features.
