Blizzard Entertainment has officially revealed the redesigned look for Overwatch hero Anran following fan backlash over her original appearance. The update comes just a week before the highly anticipated Season 2 premiere.
Anran, a new damage hero introduced in the 2025 cinematic trailer alongside her younger brother Wuyang, received criticism from both players and her voice actor for appearing too young and similar to other female characters in the game. Fans cited "same face syndrome," claiming that she lacked the distinct personality expected of a flagship hero.
Blizzard responded by hearing community feedback. Aaron Keller, Overwatch game director, explained the redesign in a new video posted on the official YouTube and X accounts.
“We want our heroes to feel unique, but we also want their visuals to match their personality. We didn’t quite land that with Anran at first,” Keller said. “Her new design reflects the confident, determined, and fierce older sister we envisioned, rather than the overly innocent, playful version previously seen.”
Blizzard changed key facial features to give Anran a more mature and expressive look:
Eyebrows reshaped for a more confident appearance.
Eyes shifted to convey sincerity and determination.
Mouth and expressions refined to avoid the "baby face" appearance.
Keller also stated that the redesign strengthens her resemblance to her brother, Wuyang, which contributes to a more solid family dynamic within the game's lore.
While some fans have praised Blizzard for taking action others believe the changes are insufficient, and some wonder why a redesign was necessary at all. Fareeha, Anran's voice actor, gave her approval on X:
“So grateful for this update, she looks much more like the strong older sibling we knew her to be. Thank you Team 4 and the Overwatch community.”
Despite differing opinions, Blizzard appears to be committed to involving the community in the development of future characters. Keller encouraged players to continue providing feedback as the studio prepares to reveal five new heroes in 2026. The next hero reveal is set for April 8, just ahead of Season 2.
His redesign is a major step in Overwatch's ongoing 2026 revamp, which began earlier this year with the removal of the "2" from the game's title and the introduction of ten new heroes. Blizzard's focus on character uniqueness and fan engagement indicates a renewed effort to balance gameplay updates with the expectations of its loyal player base.
Season 2 promises new heroes, story developments, and regular updates to improve the look and feel of Overwatch diverse roster.
