Day of the Devs the well-known showcase for new indie games, has recently transformed into a fully independent non-profit organisation signalling a major change in its structure. Founded in 2012 by Double Fine and iam8bit, this showcase has regularly provided an opportunity for small developers to promote their games at no expense to either the creators or the players.
Day of the Devs, which was previously dependent on industry sponsorship, game package proceeds, and generous time contributions, has recently broken connections with Double Fine owner Microsoft in order to run as an independent business. To help with this shift, the organisation launched its inaugural fundraising drive, with a goal of $500,000 to support upcoming events.
The 2024 schedule is full with fascinating events, such as the virtual Day of the Devs: Summer Game Fest Edition in June, the hybrid Day of the Devs: The Game Awards Edition in December, and the in-person Day of the Devs: San Francisco in March.
Day of the Devs highlights that it has always operated in a manner similar to a non-profit, and that its current official status—obtained via a fiscal sponsorship agreement with Legacy Global—improves its access to financing sources. Additionally, by making fundraising efforts more open and accountable to the public, this action hopes to increase understanding among sponsors and the general public of the critical role their support plays in fundraising.
The organization expressed,
"Additionally, this establishes Day of the Devs as being fully independent from other video game-related organizations, which clarifies our commitment to being 100% platform agnostic."
Day of the Devs remarked on the significant financial demands of putting together excellent showcases, pointing out that these demands included venue rental, equipment, staffing, and video production. The organisation recognises that over the last few years, the quantity and quality of its programmes have increased.
Twenty forthcoming games were showcased during the most recent event, Day of the Devs: The Game Awards 2023 Edition, which took place in December. Notable titles included Braid: Anniversary Edition, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, Open Roads, and Thank God You're Here. Day of the Devs' transition to a non-profit organisation is a step towards its ongoing success and shows its dedication to giving independent game developers a welcoming platform-neutral atmosphere.
