Microsoft has officially delayed Fable pushing the highly anticipated RPG from Playground Games back to February 2027. The game was originally scheduled to release in late 2026, but Xbox says the extra time will give the reboot the attention it deserves in an unusually crowded release calendar.

The announcement was made via Xbox's official channels, confirming that the long-awaited return of the beloved fantasy franchise will no longer be available this year. While no exact release date has been revealed, the game is now set for February 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.

Xbox Wants Fable to Stand on Its Own

According to Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, the delay isn't due to development issues. Instead, Microsoft believes the game is progressing well and wishes to avoid releasing it during one of the busiest gaming periods in recent memory.

On the Official Xbox Podcast, Booty stated that the development team is happy with the project's current state and remains positive about its future. He also stated that Xbox wants Fable to have its own opportunity to shine rather than competing for attention with several other major releases scheduled for the same time period.

The company echoed that message in a social media statement, saying the decision was made to give the game "the dedicated moment it deserves."

GTA 6 and Other Blockbusters Create Tough Competition

Although Xbox did not specifically mention GTA 6 as the cause of the delay, many fans believe it played a role in the decision. Rockstar's upcoming blockbuster is expected to dominate the gaming industry, making it difficult for other major releases to stand out.

Xbox has a busy lineup planned, including Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Control Resonant, and Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Earlier rumors suggested Microsoft was concerned about releasing Fable too close to GTA 6, and the new February 2027 release date has reignited those discussions.

New Fable Showcase Planned for June

While the delay means fans will have to wait longer, Xbox has confirmed that Fable will be featured at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. Players can expect to see new gameplay footage and learn more about the game's world and features.

Playground Games, the studio that created the Forza Horizon series, is developing the reboot. According to game director Ralph Fulton, the new Fable is intended to give the franchise a fresh start while maintaining the charm, humor, and spirit that made the original games so popular.

While delays are always disappointing, Xbox has clarified that the decision is based on timing rather than quality concerns. With the game reportedly in good shape and a new showcase just around the corner, Microsoft appears confident that the extra months will help Fable make a bigger impact when it launches in early 2027.
