Rockstar Games has officially delayed the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, moving the game out of its initial Fall 2025 release schedule. While fans expected new video or screenshots with the announcement, Rockstar instead offered a grabbing statement and promised more details.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” Rockstar said in a statement. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”
Rockstar highlighted that the delay was necessary to uphold the studio's high standards and provide a game that matches — and ideally exceeds — fan expectations.
“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.”
No New GTA 6 Trailer, No New Details — Yet

Despite confirming a new release date, Rockstar has not released any new gameplay details, images, or trailers. The only official content published thus far is the record-breaking launch trailer from more than 16 months ago. Since then, fans have been left in the dark, eagerly awaiting the release of a second trailer or story specifics.
Take-Two’s Previous 2025 Promise
In its February financial report, publisher Take-Two Interactive confirmed that GTA 6 would be released in 2025, citing it as a "major turning point" for the company. The publisher has announced Grand Theft Auto VI, Civilization 7, Mafia: The Old Country, and Borderlands 4 as part of its blockbuster 2025 roster.
However, industry insiders and reports have suggested that GTA 6 may miss its deadline. According to Bloomberg, numerous competitor publishers were cautious to set release dates for Fall 2025, anticipating a possible Rockstar delay.
That caution now looks to be validated.
Ripple Effect Across the Industry
Rockstar's delay might have a ripple effect across the game industry. Game developers who were strategically planned releases around GTA 6 may now shift their titles to the 2025 holiday season. Borderlands 4 has moved its release date from September 23 to September 12, perhaps to avoid conflicting with a now-empty launch window.
Rockstar’s History of Delays
This is not Rockstar's first major delay. Grand Theft Auto V was supposed to be released in Spring 2013, but it wasn't until September of that year. GTA IV experienced a similar fate, delaying its release from October 2007 to April 2008 due to development issues, particularly with the PlayStation 3.
The delay for GTA 6 means that the game will be released more than half a year later than planned. It will now be available just for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 26, 2026. A PC release has yet to be confirmed.
What’s Next for GTA 6?
While fans may be disappointed, Rockstar is anticipated to release additional details later this year. Many fans are looking forward to a second teaser, as well as actual gameplay details and possible story reveals.
Until then, the wait will continue—but if Rockstar's track record is any indication, the reward might be worth.
