Greater Essence is one of the most important upgrade resources in The Forge, especially when you reach mid- to late-game content. You'll need it to boost your weapons, armor, and overall power level - and because upgrade costs increase as you go, understanding where to farm Greater Essence becomes critical.
This guide covers how to get Greater Essence, which enemies drop it, where to find the Volcanic Depths, and what Essence types are accessible in the game.
What are the essences in the forge?
Essences are the primary upgrade items needed to improve both weapons and armor. There are seven Essence levels, each with a unique rarity, value, and effect on your gear. They can only be earned by defeating enemies, and each Essence kind has a set drop rate, so you'll normally have to beat the same enemy multiple times before getting one.
All Essence Types in The Forge
Essence | Rarity | Sell Price | Role |
Tiny Essence | Common | 2.5 | Basic early-game upgrade fuel. |
Small Essence | Common | 5 | Slightly better starter resource; easy to farm. |
Medium Essence | Uncommon | 15 | First Essence tier that significantly improves stats. |
Large Essence | Uncommon | 35 | Main mid-game upgrade material and reliable gold source. |
Greater Essence | Rare | 50 | Required for higher upgrade levels and late-game crafting. |
Epic Essence | Epic | 100 | High-end fuel and valuable gold resource. |
Superior Essence | Epic | TBA | Used for top-tier gear and rune expansion. |
Greater Essence is at a nice spot - rare enough to be valuable yet still farmable.
How to Get Greater Essence in the Forge
To start creating Greater Essence, you must first access the Forgotten Kingdom, the game's second major region. This requires:
Complete enough of Sensei Moro's quest.
Reaching Level 10
Teleport there by pressing the Portal key on your hotkey bar.
When you arrive, you'll face considerably tougher enemies, so you might need to grind some early upgrades before getting to the better farming zones.
Best Enemies to Farm for Greater Essence in the Forge
Greater Essence does not drop from all enemies; only a select few have the possibility.
Enemies That Drop Greater Essence
Enemy | Drop Chance | Location |
Deathaxe Skeleton | 1/8 | The Sunken Cells (Ruined Cave) |
Elite Rogue Skeleton | 1/6 | Volcanic Depths (Ruined Cave) |
Elite Deathaxe Skeleton | 1/6 | Volcanic Depths (Ruined Cave) |
1. Deathaxe Skeletons (Beginner Friendly Farm)
Location: Far east in the Ruined Cave -> Sunken Cells
These are the only non-elite enemies that drop Greater Essence. They are easy to kill, but:
The spawn area is limited.
Many gamers farm them to get tasks.
The level of competition can be high.
It is, however, the safest spot if you are not yet prepared for elite enemies.
2. Volcanic Depths Elites (The Best Greater Essence Farm)
Enemies:
Elite Rogue Skeletons
Elite Deathaxe Skeletons
These enemies have the greatest drop rates and spawn most often, making the Volcanic Depths the best farming location – assuming you can take the damage and tankiness of late-game creatures.
Avoid Reapers:
They have high HP and do not drop Greater Essence, making them inefficient for farming.
Where to Find the Volcanic Depths in The Forge

If you're already in the Forgotten Kingdom, follow these steps:
Enter the Ruined Cave.
Stick to the right wall until you see a large “DANGER” sign.
Keep following the wall until you find an NPC named Amber.
Just southwest of Amber is a pit with two Basalt Veins.
Mine or wait for others to mine the rocks.
Drop into the hole — this leads directly into the Volcanic Depths.
Once inside, prepare for tougher enemies and tighter corridors, but also the best chances at farming Greater Essence efficiently.
Tips to Farm Greater Essence Faster
Upgrade your gear first: Even minor stat boosts help you survive elites.
Use Health and Damage Potions for longer, safer grinding.
Reroll your race if you need a combat-focused race with better stats.
Use Portal items to shorten travel time between farming spots.
Watch enemy respawn patterns to maintain a continuous kill cycle.
Final Thoughts
Greater Essence is crucial for progressing through mid- and late-game content in The Forge. Whether you farm the easier Deathaxe Skeletons or head straight into the dangerous Volcanic Depths, knowing where to go will save you hours of grinding.
