Following their record-breaking success with Spider-Man 2 Insomniac Games is giving fans a preview into the iconic franchise's future. With the game's quick popularity and gamers' eagerness for a sequel, the studio has officially revealed an important change in its basic character relationships.
Spider-Man 2 added an exciting twist by allowing players to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they joined forces to take on the dark threats lurking in New York City's shadows, starring terrifying opponents like Venom, Lizard, and Kraven the Hunter.
However, Insomniac's narrative director, Ben Arfmann, and advanced writer, Brittney Morris, hinted at a fresh approach for the franchise that might shake up the old dual-Spider-Man formula in an interview with Gizmodo (spoilers ahead).
Given Spider-Man 2's amazing success, which became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in history, selling a remarkable 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, a sequel appears to be an obvious next step.
When asked about the game's climax and the future of the main Spider-Man character, Arfmann and Morris revealed a shocking reveal: Miles Morales will take centre stage, while Peter Parker will temporarily take a back seat.
"To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life," Morris reflected. "By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn't strong enough to carry himself at various points. That's what's been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men: they're both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not. By the end, Miles is more confident and he's like, 'Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?'"
Arfmann added, "I think pretty early on, we knew that we wanted to have that moment of handing the reins over. And as we developed it, as we started to lay down more track leading up to that moment, it just felt more and more right."
The highly regarded scene in which Miles Morales takes the spotlight was a favourite of both the creators and the cast. Arfmann stated, "I think it was Jon who wrote that scene in Aunt May's garage, and it's one of my favorite scenes. The way that Miles intuits exactly what Pete is thinking and stops him from stumbling through trying to hand over the mask. Miles going, 'You know I got this, bro,' it's such a great moment between the two of them. And it felt like such a natural conclusion; I'm not sure when specifically we decided to do that, but it always felt like the only way the game could end."
Fans can now look forward to a new perspective in the Spider-Man universe as Insomniac Games continues to weave its web of fascinating storytelling and amazing gameplay experiences with the passing of the torch to Miles Morales. Spider-Man 2's sequel promises exciting new adventures and challenges that will have players on the tip of their seats.
