Naughty Dog and Sony recently announced the planned release of The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered for PlayStation 5 on January 19, 2024, in an unexpected twist. The upgraded edition promises improved visuals and a slew of new content, including a roguelike game called "No Return."
Former Naughty Dog QA Tester Colin Freeman, who was discovered by Spanish YouTuber Joanastic, revealed a sneak peek at the exciting new gameplay feature. According to Freeman's LinkedIn profile, he was involved in testing 12 intricate "roguelike level layouts" for The Last of Us 2 Remastered, implying that the game's increased content surpasses early estimates.
Notably, each of the 12 stages in the No Return mode will include "AI dialogue regions," however details on this intriguing feature remain unknown.
The remastered version, which is offered at a premium price, is a $10 upgrade for PlayStation 4 owners. Aside from the visual improvements made possible by the PlayStation 5's improved hardware, the remaster includes new skins, director's commentary, a Speedrun mode, Guitar Free Play Mode, Lost Levels, and the much-discussed No Return Mode.
The No Return Mode is a roguelike game in which players take on the roles of Jesse, Tommy, Dina, Mel, Lev, and others. Participants travel through difficult survival missions with a ticking timer, increasing to more difficult levels with each countdown. The mode adds an element of surprise making each playthrough feel unique in terms of enemy encounters and available weapons.
Confirmed levels for the No Return Mode include:
Arcade from Seattle Day 3 (Ellie)
Downtown from Seattle Day 1 (Ellie)
Jackson (Chapter 1)
Subway from Seattle Day 1 (Ellie)
The Flooded City from Seattle Day 3 (Abby)
Naughty Dog had previously hinted at that the roguelike mode would include a range of playable characters, which would bring depth and variation to the gameplay experience.
Fans are buzzing with excitement as they anticipate the challenges and thrills that await them in this unique addition to The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which is scheduled to have 12 levels. As the release date approaches, gamers can expect an upgraded and raised adventure in one of the most critically acclaimed titles in modern gaming history.
